He pulled away from me slowly, a smile no longer on his face, and walked around the side of the car. I sighed and lowered myself into the driver’s seat. I started the car and pulled out of the parking lot.
The wind began to pick up and it howled as Pearce got in the car. He looked down at his arm with guilt and recovered the scars.
“Where did you go last night?” Pearce asked. I could feel his eyes burning into the side of my face.
“Home.” I said. I was going to keep my answers vague. I wanted to see what he could tell me.
Pearce didn’t avert his gaze. “Why?” He asked his voice sincere and innocent.
“A family dinner.” I responded.
“When did you leave?” He asked again, he was beginning to sound a lot like a child.
“As the sun was setting.” I said quickly as I turned onto another street. I was going straight to the Palace.
“Wait—you walked home, alone, in the dark??” Pearce asked. I could hear the little bit of guilt start to surface on his words.
“No one said I was alone.” I responded, a little irritated.
“Who was with you??” Pearce shot back.
“Gunter.” I replied quietly.
“Rhapsody, you let Gunter take you home?” Pearce raised his voice a little.
I pulled into the parking lot of the Palace. “Yes, I let Gunter take me home.” I retorted, raising my voice to match his. “Was that a problem, Pearce?” I spat.
“Rhapsody, you don’t know how he is.” Pearce sighed. He had lowered his voice and rubbed his eyes. I could tell he didn’t want to fight, but he wasn’t getting off easy. He put his hand on the back of my seat and pushed himself closer to me. “You don’t know what he’s done.”
“Don’t be a hypocrite, Pearce!” I said bitterly. He can’t honestly think that he can reel me in and have another girl at the same time. He can’t have his cake and be eating it too. “I don’t know you either!” I blew up at him. “And I’m pretty damn sure you don’t know me!”
Pearce started to breath heavy. “I don’t know you??” He practically laughed in my face. “I know your favorite color is purple and you love the cereal pops.” He started, “I know you always feel alone!” He said loudly. I just stared at him as he went on. “I know that you feel lost without Lo.” He had lowered his voice and looked me straight in the eye. I couldn’t remember when I had told him these things. “I knew you weren’t always like this.” He said, pushing my bangs back and out of my face. He rested one hand on my cheek while the other was still on the back of my seat. “Rhapsody, I know so much—it hurts sometimes.”
I reached up and put my hand on his. I looked down, “Pearce—.”
“Please, Rhapsody, just—let me show you how much I know. How much I care.” He said quietly. “Please.” I looked him in his hazel eyes, He moved in slowly, closing his eyes as he inched forward.
{{(have I ever mentioned his eyes before??!)}}
I took my hand off of his and pulled back slowly. He opened his eyes and looked me straight in the eyes. He kept eye contact and inched forward again. I needed an excuse, I wasn’t ready for Pearce. I felt like he had more experience than I did. When I really thought about it, I think Pearce was the first boy I ever kissed and I bet he isn’t even a virgin. I couldn’t believe it. I am a senior at Mount Bishop high, and I didn’t kiss a boy until yesterday!
Pearce was so close to me, I could count his eye lashes. He closed his eyes, and tilted his head a little. He brushed his nose past mine and I could practically taste him.
“Rhapsody, I wouldn’t hurt you.” He whispered on my lips. I let my eyes fall to a close. “I won’t let anyone hurt you.” He said, reminding me of the promise he made to Lo about keeping me safe.
“Pearce,” I whispered, “I still have a promise to keep. Lo made me promise.” Pearce stopped dead in his tracks I could tell he was pulling away because His nose dragged back across my skin. I opened my eyes to see Pearce biting his lip. “Pearce.” I said thoughtfully. He looked at me with a look of hurt in his eyes. “I don’t think we should do this anymore.”
His eye brows furrowed. “Do…what?”
“Well, kiss each other.” I said and in a desperate attempt to ruin the mood I dug into old graves. “I barely know you.” I said.
Pearce smiled a little and as he opened his mouth to talk something came flying at my windshield. Water and ice spread itself across my windshield and hood. I clutched my chest in surprise and Pearce opened his door and stepped out of the car. He was standing like he was ready to fight.
“Oy!” Blake was holding an empty glass in one hand. “Unless you two are going to do it, get out of the car!” He yelled and went back inside the Palace. I let my head rest on the seat and I took a deep breath before I got out of my car. Pearce was already walking up to the palace and I followed him in to see equipment. Not just regular equipment, but recording equipment. I spent the next two hours recording all of my Piano parts before I left and drove home. Pearce and I were too busy to really talk to each other, but before I left he kissed me on the cheek.
The Whole drive home I could only think about how Pearce made my body go crazy in the best way.
When I got home, I studied, I ate, I took a shower, and then I went into my room.
I looked at the clock next to my bed. It read 9:30. It was too early to go to sleep, but too late to leave the house again. I knew Rhett was home because I could hear voices and noises coming from his room. I got up, left my room and walked down the hall. Maybe Rhett could help me make sense of it all.
I knocked on Rhett’s door. I’d never even seen his room before. Shows what kind of sister I am.
“It’s open.” He called calmly. I pushed open the door to see Rhett pulling on a pair of pants. His room was pretty neat except for some clothes on the floor.
“I heard talking.” I said quietly. “Is Emma here?”
He smiled a little and jerked his head towards his bed. I looked past him to see Emma sleeping. Her hair was messed up and I could see that if she moved around she would be the victim of a nip slip. Her cheeks were red and she had one of Rhett’s shirts in her hand.
“Rhett, did you—?” I asked shocked.
“She told me she wanted to me to.” He said humbly, “I mean; I couldn’t say no.”
“Rhett you’re 18!” I said harshly in a whisper. I watched him walk over to Emma and kiss her on the forehead.
“And as of today,” He said as he smoothed her hair. “She’s 16. She wanted this for her birthday.” He pulled the blanket up over her chest and then turned to face me. “I made sure.” He said.
I shook my head. “As long as she doesn’t get you in trouble.” I sighed. “When is she going home?”
“She’s spending the night here.” Rhett said as he walked across the room to get a shirt. I looked back at her. She had wiggled around, revealing her chest and a hickey on her collar bone. I shook my head. I looked over at Rhett, who had his back to me.
“Rhett, what’s that on your back?” I asked. Referring to the diagonal marks running from his shoulder blades to around his sides. Four went to the left and four went to the right.
“She really likes to, dig her claws into things.” Rhett said with a smirk.
I think I threw up a little when he said that. “And one that note, I make an exit.” I said. I turned around and left out of his room. I forgot what I had gone in there for…
